On the Start menu, click Control Panel. This displays the Visual Studio Maintenance Mode dialog box. My question is: which version of the VS Pro edition should I buy to do this "upgrade" from the Trial to the permanent edition?
I do not have any version of VS currently installed on my Windows Vista computer except the Trial version already mentioned, which of course I can no longer use.
The above instructions refer to an "upgrade" from the Trial edition, but does that mean the upgrade version of the VS Pro product is sufficient, or can that version only be used when upgrading from a permanent non-trial version of VS already on one's computer, such as VS which I do not have? Another question: The instructions above — and other comments I have read - seem to suggest that merely entering the product key from the purchased DVD and clicking the Upgrade button will do the job quickly; that is, they imply that a full, lengthy installation from the DVD is not needed, presumably because the previous installation of the Trial version has already copied over all or most of the required files, and the Upgrade action merely re-activates them.
But is this truly so? Some correspondents on this subject take a different approach.
