I am trying to learn more about how the autologin works for a windows xp client, and what group policies could be set to restrict this, or allow this. This computer I am working with currently auto logs onto a regular user account correctly each time it is rebooted.
I checked the registry in the computer, and I see the DefaultUserName key exists with the username that is autologing, but I do not see the DefaultPassword anywhere in the winlogon folder, and searching for it in the registry comes up with nothing. The AutoAdminLogon is set to 1. I'm not sure how the computer is able to autologin without that key storeing the password, as the article implies the password for the autologin is stored in plaintext in the registry in that key location.
I'm wondeing if this article is out of date and maybe the password is stored somewhere else? I'm also wondering where in group policy there are restrictions on the autologin, we want to make a policy that would allow autologin's that we can filter to the computers we want to do it. If you have questions about how to do please post them. As a result, in order to find a policy that might be managing this behavior, run gpresult on a client that's configured to autologin and check each applied policy for scripts or registry keys configured that are relevant.
I've seen situations where the auto login is configured with 'control userpasswords2' and the registry key isn't created. I don't have an answer as to where its stored in that scenario.
